Day 78: Fort William Rest Day 1

I’ve been “resting” in and around Fort William today. I haven’t exactly rested much with a short hike out to a waterfall.

  • Date: 6 June 2024
  • Start: Fort William
  • End: Fort William
  • Miles: 0.0
  • Total miles: 1,051.6
  • Accommodation: Glen Nevis Campsite
I was intending to make porridge this morning for breakfast, but Sam (who joined me last night) and I walked past the breakfast van in the campsite and we were too tempted by the bacon rolls.

After that, we headed out in Sam’s car to a short hike that goes to Steall Waterfall. The weather was again mixed, with heavy downpours mixed with sunshine.

We arrived at the base of the waterfall, well not quite the base. To actually get to the waterfall you needed to cross a river via a very sketchy looking rope bridge. Sam made it look easy, but as I attempted it I got scared and turned back. Usually I’d be all over things like this, but knowing I’ve got to complete my walk, I didn’t want to risk even the slightest injury.

We headed back to camp and I got on with my laundry while Sam went to the local climbing centre. After the laundry was done I went into town and popped by my previous employer to post a guide book back home.

I then popped into my favourite shop, not with the intention of buying anything, but just for a nosey round.

I then met Sam in town for dinner and we headed back to camp. The midges were out in force tonight, so we retreated to our tents very quickly.

You might be wondering why this is rest day 1 in Fort William, and that’s because there’s a second rest day tomorrow. I had intended to start the Great Glen Way tomorrow, however the first night was to be spent at a wild camp with no water or any shops nearby. So I’ve decided to combine the first two days of the trail into one, which I’ll start on Saturday.

Don’t worry, you’ll still be getting a blog post tomorrow, whatever I end up doing.

    1. Thanks Nicola! It’s another mixed day of weather today so I don’t think there’s any escaping it!
