Day 27: Wells to Regil
Back to business as usual today, as I headed up and over the Mendip Hills. My foot is still a little sore, but has improved a lot over the last few days.
- Date: 16 April 2024
- Start: Wells
- End: Regil
- Miles: 14.3
- Total miles: 310.7
- Accommodation: Walnut Tree Farm
After finally leaving Wells, I headed to Tesco to stock up and then I was climbing up onto the Mendip Hills. It was a beautiful day all day today, and I got great views of Somerset as I passed up by the Wookey Hole caves.
I spent most of the day on top of the Mendip Hills, going through various fields, forests and moorland. What was most noticeable was how dry the ground was compared to last week. That warm weather over the weekend did something!
I got to the other side of the Mendips, and descended into Compton Martin, a place I’ve been to many times on hikes.
I only had a few miles left before getting to camp, up and down a couple of hills. I had to navigate a lot of electric fences, even crawling underneath one to keep going on my path.
I made it to camp, put the tent up, had a shower, and a wee. It was a beautiful evening, so I ate my dinner outside of the tent for once and enjoyed the view.
Having so many days off, it’s actually been quite hard work getting going again today. The route wasn’t exactly challenging, but I feel exhausted like I did at the start of the walk. I’m sure I’ll get back to a level that I was at in no time. But for now, an early night.

Yay!
