Day 83: Great Glen Way - Alltsigh to Drumnadrochit
Day 4 on the Great Glen Way, where I reached the highest point of the trail. Other than great views of Loch Ness at the top, today wasn’t particularly exciting.
- Date: 11 June 2024
- Start: Alltsigh
- End: Drumnadrochit
- Miles: 12.0
- Total miles: 1,113.9
- Accommodation: Loch Ness Hostel
There was a bonfire set up at the hostel later in the evening yesterday, but because I’m miserable, I didn’t take part. To be fair, the midges were relentless last night, probably because I was actually staying next to Loch Ness, so I didn’t really want to go outside.
This morning, I headed back up the track that I came down yesterday and rejoined the high route of the Great Glen Way.
The trail then became very steep as I headed to its highest point. I was rewarded with fantastic views however.
The trail dipped to another viewpoint with a bench, so I sat down for a bit and enjoyed the view.
The rest of the day was a bit dull sadly, as I headed along a forest track, then along a road which dragged.
I then spotted some highland cows in a field next to the road. The trail moved onto a track, then back onto the road. At the end of the road was today’s destination of Drumnadrochit (try pronouncing that one).
There’s a campsite in Drumnadrochit, but I’d already chosen to stay in a hostel as it wasn’t that much more expensive. I’m glad as it’s meant to get down to 3 degrees tonight. As I saw from the BBC, I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks it’s bloody cold at the moment.
Tomorrow is the last day of the Great Glen Way, as I head into Inverness.
