Day 68: Peebles to Uphall (Edinburgh)

After the pathetic walking attempt yesterday, I more than made up for it today by combining two walking days into one.

  • Date: 27 May 2024
  • Start: Peebles
  • End: Uphall
  • Miles: 28.4
  • Total miles: 908.0
  • Accommodation: Edinburgh Backpackers

I struggled to sleep last night. Mainly down to the room being too hot, but also I was worried about the lack of progress over the last few days and wanted to get going as early as possible today.

I had to move hostels, so I packed my bag and put it in storage, before catching the first bus of the morning to Peebles, just after 7am.

After a trip to Tesco in Peebles for lunch, I headed out on my walk. The first several miles were over a series of hills and through forests. Probably the best forests I’ve been through in the whole walk.

I then had to walk a long road into West Linton, which was a very pretty little town. I popped to the Co Op here to buy my second lunch. It was going to be a long day!

I then headed up into the Pentland Hills. Sadly, the track I took was not in a fit state. It was water logged almost everywhere, which led to a frustrating few miles.

The final few miles were along roads through various towns. I’ll actually be on tarmac now for the next few days as I navigate between Edinburgh and Glasgow.

I jumped on the train at Uphall, which arrived in minutes of me arriving, back to Edinburgh. After picking up my bag, I went to the next hostel which I’ll be staying at for the next two nights.

I’ve done a record breaking amount of miles today, only made possible by having a small backpack. It only took me 9 hours to cover over 28 miles.

I’ll be doing the same over the next 3 days, walking only with a small backpack. The entirety of the next 3 days walking is on roads or canal paths, so I’d rather get them done as quickly as possible.
