Day 29: Bristol to Chepstow

I’ve finally left the South West and have arrived in Wales. Sadly I didn’t see a ‘Welcome to Wales’ sign but it was obvious I’d arrived by a different sign.

  • Date: 18 April 2024
  • Start: Bristol
  • End: Chepstow
  • Miles: 13.2
  • Total miles: 338.5
  • Accommodation: Greenman Hostel

I jumped back on the bus to Henbury this morning, through the hustle and bustle of Bristol city centre.

The day started by walking through many fields and tiny villages. It was glorious weather near enough all day as I crossed over the M5 and M4 before reaching the old Severn bridge.

Walking over the bridge was more terrifying than I thought it was going to be. It was very windy so you had to actually put some effort in to stay in a straight line. You can also tell the bridge is old, as it vibrated and shook a lot as lorries passed me. It took a good hour to walk from one side to the other.

Once over the other side, I followed the Wales coastal path into Chepstow, where I arrived at my hostel for the night. It turned out to be rather quiet, with only one other person staying.

Tomorrow, I join Offa’s Dyke Path which I’ll follow for the next 5 days. I’ll get off about half way at Knighton, as if I kept going then I’d arrive in Prestatyn, home, and that’s the wrong destination.

I walked Offa’s Dyke Path 11 years ago with my friend Rhys, although in the opposite direction. I wonder if it’s changed at all, I doubt it.
