Day 20: Taunton to Long Sutton

A day following rivers across the levels of Somerset, meaning an incredibly flat day of walking. Probably the flattest I’ll get the entire walk.

  • Date: 9 April 2024
  • Start: Taunton
  • End: Long Sutton
  • Miles: 17.1
  • Total miles: 263.3
  • Accommodation: Brook Farm

I had a lovely breakfast of bacon, sausages and eggs this morning at Elaine and Andrew’s house, before bidding farewell into the blustery wind.

I soon ran into a bit of a problem after following a river trail for about an hour. A huge puddle. I decided I didn’t really have much option but to go through it. The water came up to just below my knees, but did have the benefit of giving my boots a thorough clean.

Immediately after this, I was following river banks all the way to the end, resting on the sporadic picnic benches until I reached the town of Langport. The sun made an appearance for the afternoon, which was very pleasant.

I arrived at camp in the village of Long Sutton, where I had the entire field to myself. The owners dog wanted to play fetch which scuppered my plans to put my tent up.

Once the dog got called away, I got the tent up and had a shower, then headed to the nearest pub. Even though it’s sunny, it’s a very cold day today, so I sat next to the fire in the pub where I intend to spend the evening.

  1. That dog would’ve never bothered you had you got Mickey.. though you’d have had to carry him through that puddle!
