Day 7: Newquay to Treyarnon

A very mixed day weather wise, with sunny spells, hailstorms, and blistering wind.

  • Date: 27 March 2024
  • Start: Newquay
  • End: Treyarnon
  • Miles: 12.8
  • Total miles: 78.1
  • Accommodation: YHA Treyarnon Bay

It was finally time for me to leave the hostel in Newquay, which I’d been staying at for the last three nights. I didn’t rush to leave, as today was only 12.8 miles, and it kept hailing this morning.

I walked through Newquay centre to get out the other side and back onto the South West Coast Path. Here I walked through the Boardmasters Festival site, a festival I’ve been to four times previously, but looks very different without a festival going on.

The ups and downs continued as I passed through Watergate Bay and Mawgan Porth. The weather was variable, with huge storms out at sea, and the occasional downpour of hailstones.

As storm clouds were chasing me, I picked up the pace to get to my stop for the night, the YHA in Treyarnon Bay. I’d booked a bed for the night, because why not, but am happy I did as the temperature is supposed to reach 3 degrees tonight. That’s not a comfortable camping temperature. As I reached the hostel, the heavens opened again, but at least I was now inside.

After having a shower and utilising the use of the drying room and doing some laundry, I did a bit more planning up until Barnstaple. Once I settled down for dinner (curry from a tin and a bag of rice), the sun popped out before setting.

I’ve got a bed in a six bed dorm, and as it reaches 7pm, I’m the only one in there. Let’s hope that remains for the rest of the evening.

If you’re a keen weather tracker, you might have seen there’s a storm coming in down the South West, particularly the wind being the issue.

Thankfully, my route tomorrow leaves the South West Coast Path for the majority of the day (I’ll explain why tomorrow), so I’ll be away from the coast, and I’ll also be camping in land.
